Achieving a Positive Mindset

Life doesn't always go the way you want it to, right?  As a caregiver of a loved one, you hear the word "cancer' or  you have a sleepless night or are trying to figure out a work project in this busy time.

You're in a season of uncertainty, stress and anxiety and a life of extreme busy.  Much of your resilience, fulfillment and health comes down to how you see things.

That's why I wanted to write this blog about how your attitude impacts everything.  It directs your thoughts, your energy and most of all, the actions you take.

Are you rolling your eyes 🙄 at me yet?   I'm not saying you have to be this bubbly, over-the-top happy person who sees everything in rose-colored glasses and ignores all your caregiving challenges and struggles.  I don't mean that at all.

What I'm suggesting is you use more of your intelligence to become more aware of how much power you have inside of you and take responsibility for the impact of your attitude.  Think about how it can affect your current situation, your life and  your loved one.

While that may seem obvious, most people just react to the world around them and allow their attitude to be dictated by their circumstance.

I debated and erased this next paragraph several times, but finally decided to share this with you.   What attitude would you have if the doctor told you that you had 2-11 months to live?

When my Dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic cancer, I watched a strong man (who lived an amazing life filled with hard work, hobbies, a 58 year marriage, family, friends and faith) fall into this deep negative mindset.   When the doctors told him he had 2-11 months to live, he chose to path of waiting to die.  He lived in fear, uncertainty, grief and sadness.  When I look back today, it still brings a flood of emotions and pain for me.   I tried and tried to influence his mindset and couldn't.  After a few weeks of watching him, I made the strong choice to take responsibility for my attitude and mindset.

It comes down to training your brain to look at gratitude and positivity AND also expressing it consistently.  Make the choice as soon as you get up each morning and decide how you'll embrace the day.  It's all in the attitude you decide to adopt.

 - You choose your attitude.  It doesn't choose you.

Sometimes it's easier said than done, right?!!  Choosing your attitude doesn't mean you won't have problems, make mistakes, feel disappointments or pain.  What it does mean, though, is that you summon the attitude you want to help you navigate everything and anything today brings - the good, the bad and even the ugly.  I don't know how many times I have said "Satan, you're not going to get me today💪"

Maya Angelou said,

"If you don't like something, change it and if you can't change it, change your attitude."

So make the most of your situation(s).  Looking for what's right in a situation can completely transform your state of mind.  You then have the ability to make decisions and move forward

After watching my Dad's journey, I adopted healthy habits each day for my body, mind and spirts.   It has help me now through my the last two years of caregiving for my spouse and mom.   Click on this link and get my
